Frieze Seoul 2026 offered more than a view of the works inside the fair.
Alongside the exhibitions, several articles in the fair edition of The Art Newspaper raised questions that felt relevant to FALJU COINS: how Korea’s art market is changing, how a growing market is beginning to build stronger systems around it, and how artists and institutions are looking again at histories that were once overlooked.
These ideas are not limited to contemporary art.
Historical objects, including coins, also sit within changing ideas of value, collecting, design, trade, and cultural memory.

The Art Newspaper, Frieze Seoul / Kiaf Seoul fair edition, September 2026.A market after the first wave of excitement
South Korea’s art market grew rapidly around the launch of Frieze Seoul in 2022.
That early excitement has cooled, and the domestic market has come down from its 2022 peak. Yet the current picture is more complicated than a simple decline.
According to figures cited by The Art Newspaper, the market reached KRW 806.6 billion in 2022 and fell to KRW 615.1 billion in 2024. Even after that adjustment, it remained 24.5% larger than the previous peak recorded in 2017.
Frieze Seoul 2026 itself brought together more than 125 galleries from 30 countries, with over 70% based in the Asia-Pacific region.
The market may be quieter than it was at the height of the boom, but Seoul continues to hold an important place within the Asian art market.
A younger collecting culture
Another interesting point is the changing profile of collectors.
Data discussed in The Art Newspaper shows a strong presence of collectors in their 30s and 40s, while women represent more than half of collectors under 40 in one of the surveys cited.
For historical objects, this matters.
A younger collector may first enter through contemporary art, design, fashion, or interiors, and later become interested in objects whose value comes from age, material, origin, and historical context.
That movement from visual interest to deeper collecting is something FALJU COINS continues to watch closely.
Growth also brings structure
The reporting provisions under South Korea’s Art Promotion Act took effect on 26 July 2026.
The law introduces a reporting system for art-service businesses, including galleries, auction houses, dealers, advisers, and appraisers. The first stage of implementation, however, has caused some confusion as the administrative systems supporting the new requirements are still being established.
The systems are still developing, but the direction is worth noting.
As a market grows, questions around documentation, responsibility, transparency, and resale become harder to leave informal.
Korea is now beginning to build more formal infrastructure around a market that expanded very quickly.
Looking again at what was overlooked
Frieze Seoul also introduced a new Spotlight section in 2026.
The section presented 12 solo presentations of twentieth-century artists, many of whom had received less attention within the dominant Western art narrative.
What interested us here was the idea of looking again.
Value does not always come from discovering something new.
Sometimes it becomes clearer when an existing artist, object, or history is placed in a better context.
That idea feels very close to collecting historical coins.

1901-B British Trade Dollar, NGC AU 58. A historical coin shaped by international trade and the movement of currency across Asia.FALJU Perspective
Coins are small objects, but the histories they carry are rarely small.
A portrait can reflect political power.
A metal can tell us something about trade and economic conditions.
A design can carry ideas of religion, identity, authority, or cultural exch
ange across borders.
Historical coins often reflect the systems and values of the time in which they were made.
Monarchy, empire, trade, religion, and political power can all appear in their portraits, inscriptions, materials, and designs.
At FALJU COINS, these elements are approached as part of the historical context of each coin.
Looking at that wider context helps us understand not only what an object is, but also the world in which it existed.
One thing that became clearer during this visit was the importance of context.
Collecting is not only about what is rare, expensive, or immediately recognizable
Sometimes the most interesting part begins when we look again at the material, the origin, and the history around an object.
FALJU COINS approaches historical coins in the same way.
Not only as objects to own, but as small pieces of history that can still be held in the hand.

Frieze Seoul 2026
The Art Newspaper
Frieze Seoul 2026
The Art Newspaper
FALJU COINS
FALJU COINS
FALJU COINS
