Historical Note
歴史背景
The British Trade Dollar was introduced in 1895 to facilitate trade in Hong Kong, the Straits Settlements, and other parts of East Asia.
The “B” following the date on this 1901 issue is associated with the Bombay Mint, one of the facilities involved in the production of British Trade Dollars during this period.
Its specifications closely followed the widely accepted silver trade coins circulating throughout the region, allowing British merchants to compete more effectively in international commerce.
The obverse depicts Britannia standing with shield and trident, while the reverse combines Chinese and Malay inscriptions intended for use in Asian markets.

英国トレードダラーは1895年、香港や海峡植民地をはじめとする東アジア市場での貿易を円滑にする目的で導入されました。
本品の年号「1901」の後ろに見られる「B」は、当時の英国トレードダラー製造に関わったボンベイ造幣局（Bombay Mint）を示す記号として知られています。
当時東アジアで広く流通していた大型銀貨と同等の規格で製造され、英国商人の国際貿易を支える役割を担いました。
表面には盾と三叉槍を持つブリタニアが描かれ、裏面には中国語とマレー語による額面表示が刻まれています。これは東アジア市場向け貨幣としての性格を今に伝える特徴的な意匠です。
