Historical Note
The British Trade Dollar was introduced in 1895 for use in international trade in the Far East.
It circulated in markets including Hong Kong and, in its early years, the Straits Settlements, where large silver coins played an important role in regional commerce.
Rather than being created primarily for domestic use in Britain, the Trade Dollar was closely connected to Britain’s commercial activity in Asia.
Some historical interpretations suggest that its weight and silver content were chosen to align with the silver trade coins already familiar in Asian markets, helping it circulate more easily in regional commerce.
The 1901B issue belongs to this wider history of trade coinage linking British minting with Asian markets.

FALJU Perspective
FALJU COINS selected this piece for the way its design brings together Britain and the Asian markets it was created to serve.
Britannia, the merchant ship, Chinese characters, and Jawi script all coexist on a single coin, giving the piece a visual language shaped directly by international trade.
For us, the appeal of this Trade Dollar lies in that intersection: a British coin whose identity was formed as much by the markets of East Asia as by the country that issued it.

FALJU COINS
