Historical Note
“Una and the Lion” entered British numismatic history in 1839, when William Wyon created the celebrated design for a British £5 coin during the early reign of Queen Victoria.
Its subject was drawn from Edmund Spenser’s epic poem The Faerie Queene. In Wyon’s composition, the young Queen Victoria appears as Una alongside the lion, transforming the literary scene into a powerful royal and national allegory.
The design became one of the most recognizable works associated with nineteenth-century British coinage and has continued to inspire later interpretations.
For this 2021 St. Helena issue, the historic subject was reinterpreted by Glyn Davies in a contemporary two-ounce silver proof format, preserving the relationship between Una and the lion while giving the composition a distinctly modern sculptural character.
