The design revisits William Wyon’s celebrated Una and the Lion composition of 1839, in which the young Queen Victoria appears as Una beside the British lion.

Historical Note
The original *Una and the Lion* design was created by William Wyon for the British five-pound piece of 1839, during the early reign of Queen Victoria.
Inspired by Edmund Spenser’s *The Faerie Queene*, the design portrays the young Queen Victoria as Una, while the lion beside her represents the British people. The composition became one of the most distinctive designs associated with Wyon and early Victorian coinage.
In 2019, the bicentenary year of Queen Victoria’s birth, the British Virgin Islands issued this modern interpretation of *Una and the Lion*, bringing the nineteenth-century image of the young Queen into a large-format silver coin.
The design therefore connects the 2019 issue directly with one of the best-known numismatic images of Victoria’s early reign.

歴史的背景
「ウナとライオン」の原型は、ヴィクトリア女王の治世初期にあたる1839年、ウィリアム・ワイオンが英国の5ポンド貨のために制作した意匠です。
エドマンド・スペンサーの『妖精の女王（The Faerie Queene）』に着想を得て、若きヴィクトリア女王をウナとして描き、その傍らのライオンには英国民が重ねられています。この構図は、ワイオンと初期ヴィクトリア朝貨幣を代表する意匠のひとつとなりました。
ヴィクトリア女王の生誕200周年にあたる2019年、英領ヴァージン諸島では「ウナとライオン」を現代的に再構成した本作が発行され、19世紀の若き女王のイメージが大型銀貨として再び表現されました。
2019年の本作は、ヴィクトリア女王の治世初期を象徴する代表的な貨幣意匠と、現代の記念貨を直接つなぐ一枚です。

Drawn to the way the large format gives Una and the lion space to stand apart while still reading as one composition, FALJU COINS selected this piece for its scale and balance.
At this size, details that can feel compressed on a smaller coin become much easier to read: Una’s upright figure, the weight of the lion beside her, the open space between them, and the long inscription around the design.
What interests us most is the contrast between the two figures. Una does not overpower the lion, and the lion is not shown in attack; the composition depends instead on the tension between control and strength.
On this five-ounce piece, that relationship becomes almost architectural, with the broad field allowing the original idea to unfold across the surface rather than being confined within it.

5オンスという大きな面になることで、その関係がよりはっきりと現れ、ワイオンの意匠そのものを空間として見るような感覚が生まれているところに、この個体の面白さを感じます。
