Historical Note
George III reigned from 1760 until his death in 1820. The Royal Mint issued this £5 coin in 2020 to mark 200 years since his death and to celebrate his long reign.
George III had a wide range of interests, including astronomy and agriculture. Dominique Evans developed the reverse as a collection of images connected with the king and his life rather than using a portrait alone.
The design also incorporates George III’s royal cypher. The letters combine his initial “G” with “R” for Rex, the Latin word for king.
The edge inscription, I GLORY IN THE NAME OF BRITON, is taken from a speech by George III and adds another direct reference to the king himself.

I GLORY IN THE NAME OF BRITON
FALJU Perspective
What interested us in this piece was not simply the portrait of George III, but the way his reign is built around him through a series of smaller symbols.
The design includes references to different parts of his life and identity, so the king is presented not as an isolated figure, but as the centre of a much broader story.
That approach feels especially appropriate for a commemorative coin marking 200 years since his death. Rather than reducing his reign to a single image, the reverse gathers several aspects of George III into one composition.
For us, that layered portrayal is the strongest part of the coin: the portrait remains central, but the surrounding details are what give the design its depth.
