First issued in 1847, the Gothic Crown remains one of the most distinctive achievements of nineteenth-century British coinage.
Designed by William Wyon, the coin brings together an intricately modelled portrait of Queen Victoria, Gothic-style lettering, and a reverse centred on the quartered Royal Arms. Every element is carefully arranged, creating a design that feels balanced yet full of movement.
The obverse depicts Queen Victoria wearing an ornate crown and richly detailed robes. The portrait differs noticeably from the restrained classical profiles more commonly associated with British coinage.
