Historical Note
The original Gothic Crown was issued in Britain in 1847 during the reign of Queen Victoria.
Its celebrated design brought together the work of William Wyon and William Dyce, combining a cruciform arrangement of heraldic shields with intricate detail and distinctive Gothic lettering.
The reverse features the arms of the Order of the Garter at the center, surrounded by shields and the floral emblems of the United Kingdom. The Latin inscription around the border is presented in Blackletter-style lettering, one of the defining features of the original Gothic Crown.
This 2022 St. Helena issue brings that historic design into a modern two-ounce silver proof format while preserving the balance, symmetry, and formal character of the nineteenth-century composition.
