Britannia has appeared on British coinage for centuries as a female figure associated with the sea, defence, and national identity.
The modern Silver Britannia series began in 1997. This 1998 issue belongs to the early period of the series and features Philip Nathan’s standing Britannia design.
With its trident, shield, and flowing drapery, the design presents Britannia as a calm but resilient figure.
