Historical Note
The Royal Tudor Beasts Collection is inspired by the ten heraldic beasts that stand on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace, one of the principal royal residences associated with Henry VIII.
The beasts were used to represent the lineage of Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour, and to emphasise royal ancestry and legitimacy.
Among them, the Lion of England has a much older history. It had been used in English royal heraldry since the twelfth century and became associated with royal authority, strength, courage, and dignity.
On this coin, that long-established symbol is presented as part of a modern series that looks back to the visual language of the Tudor court.
