Historical Note
The écu was one of the principal silver denominations of the French monarchy and formed an important part of the country’s monetary system.
This 1729 issue was struck during the reign of Louis XV. The obverse carries the king’s portrait, while the reverse presents the crowned arms of France within a wreath.
Coins of this type circulated as working money in eighteenth-century France, and surviving examples often preserve visible traces of long use.
