Historical Note
The Bengal Presidency was one of the principal administrative regions of the East India Company in India.
The East India Company continued to use the established rupee system and issued coins in forms derived from Mughal monetary tradition. This coin was struck in the name of Shah Alam II and carries Persian inscriptions rather than European-style portraiture.
The reverse names Murshidabad, while the coin belongs to a machine-milled series associated with the Bengal Presidency.
The vertical milling seen on this type formed part of changes made to Bengal rupee coinage in the early nineteenth century.

FALJU Perspective
FALJU COINS selected this piece for the beauty of its calligraphic surface and the quiet presence created by its aged silver.
Unlike portrait-based European coinage, the visual character of this coin comes almost entirely from its Persian inscriptions.
The flowing script and worn silver surface give the piece a sense of history that is very different from modern coinage.
We view this rupee not simply as a silver coin, but as a small historical object shaped by trade, administration, and the continuity of monetary culture.

FALJU COINS
