Historical Note
The 2017 Proof Sovereign marks the 200th anniversary of the modern Sovereign.
Introduced in 1817 as part of Britain’s coinage reform after the Napoleonic Wars, the one-pound Sovereign replaced the guinea, valued at twenty-one shillings. Its reverse featured Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon.
For the 2017 anniversary, The Royal Mint revived the original design, with St George holding a broken lance and wearing a plumed helmet, surrounded by the Garter and the inscription “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE.” According to The Royal Mint, this complete composition had not appeared on a member of the Sovereign family since 1820.
The obverse bears Jody Clark’s fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the date “2017.”

2017年のプルーフ・ソブリンは、モダン・ソブリンの誕生から200年を記念した一枚です。
1817年、ナポレオン戦争後の貨幣改革により、英国では21シリングのギニー金貨に代わる、1ポンドのソブリン金貨が登場しました。
その裏面に採用されたのが、ベネデット・ピストルッチによる「セント・ジョージと竜」です。
2017年版では、この初期意匠を復刻。羽飾り付きの兜と折れた槍を持つ聖ジョージを、ガーターと「HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE」の銘文が囲みます。王立造幣局によれば、この構成が完全な形でソブリン・シリーズに用いられたのは、1820年以来でした。
表面には、Jody Clarkによるエリザベス2世の第5肖像と、発行年「2017」が刻まれています。
