Historical Note
In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to reach seventy years on the throne.
This gold Sovereign commemorates her Platinum Jubilee—a celebration of that anniversary, marked by ceremonies and public events across the United Kingdom.
The Sovereign’s reverse usually depicts St George slaying a dragon. For this anniversary, it features a specially created Royal Coat of Arms by Timothy Noad. Noad had also designed the heraldic reverse for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002, marking fifty years of her reign. Twenty years later, he returned with a new design to celebrate her seventieth anniversary.
Two distinct commemorative Sovereign designs bear the date 2022. The Platinum Jubilee issue presented here features Elizabeth II’s portrait, while the Memorial issue, released following her death, features Charles III. This coin records the celebrations of her seventy-year reign, before the same year became one of remembrance.
