The design presents strength not through conquest, but through guidance, restraint, and moral purpose.
Una and the Lion first appeared on the British five-pound piece of 1839, designed by William Wyon during the early reign of Queen Victoria.
The scene was inspired by Edmund Spenser’s sixteenth-century poem The Faerie Queene.
In the poem, Una represents truth and moral virtue. The lion, initially a potentially threatening presence, recognises her goodness and becomes her companion and protector.
Wyon transformed this literary episode into a royal image.
Una takes the form of the young Queen Victoria, walking calmly beside the British lion.
She carries a sceptre, while the lion moves with quiet strength rather than aggression.
The relationship between the two figures is central to the design.
Una does not defeat or dominate the lion.
She guides it. The lion, in turn, is not shown as subdued.
Its strength remains visible, yet it is expressed through restraint rather than force.
This made the design especially fitting for the beginning of Victoria’s reign.
Rather than presenting authority through conquest alone, it expresses leadership through guidance, moral clarity, and disciplined strength.
The inscription, DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS, translates as “May God direct my steps.”
It reinforces the theme of guidance and reflects the religious and moral ideals of the Victorian period.
Collectors continue to admire Una and the Lion for William Wyon’s exceptional engraving, its literary origins, and the subtlety of its symbolism.
It is a royal image, yet it avoids conventional displays of military power or authority.
The original 1839 five-pound piece remains one of the most admired British coins.
Modern interpretations have carried the design into different metals, denominations, and issuing territories.
Although they do not share the historical position of the original, they demonstrate how enduring Wyon’s composition continues to be.
For many collectors, Una and the Lion also provides an accessible introduction to British numismatics, bringing together literature, monarchy, allegory, and design history within a single image.
Una and the Lion continues to resonate because it leaves room for interpretation.
It can be seen as an image of Britain, monarchy, guidance, or strength governed by principle.
Its lasting appeal lies not in spectacle, but in the quiet understanding between Una and the lion beside her.
