コインのグレードとは
グレードは状態を知る手がかりですが、価値を決める要素はそれだけではありません。
Coin grades describe the condition of a coin.
They help collectors understand how much wear, detail, surface quality, and overall preservation a coin has.
In modern numismatics, certified coins are commonly graded using the Sheldon Scale, a 1 to 70 grading system widely used by major grading companies such as NGC and PCGS.
On this scale, 1 represents a heavily worn coin, while 70 represents the highest possible grade.
The letters before the number also matter.
MS stands for Mint State and is used for coins struck in the style of circulation coins but preserved without circulation wear.
PF, or PR, stands for Proof and is used for specially struck collector coins with a different production process and finish.
AU stands for About Uncirculated.
These coins usually retain strong detail while showing slight wear.
Lower grades can still be highly collectible.
Older coins, historically important pieces, scarce issues, or visually appealing coins may remain desirable even with visible wear.
A higher grade does not always mean a better purchase.
The value of a coin depends not only on grade, but also on rarity, demand, design, metal content, historical significance, certification, and price.
For collectors, grades are a useful way to compare condition more clearly.
They provide structure, but they do not replace careful observation of the coin itself.

コインのグレードとは、そのコインの状態を表す基準です。
摩耗の程度、細部の残り方、表面状態、保存状態などを判断するための目安になります。
現代のコイン市場では、鑑定済みコインの評価に「シェルドン・スケール」と呼ばれる1から70までの評価基準が広く使われています。
これはNGCやPCGSなど主要な鑑定機関でも採用されているグレード基準です。
この数字では、1に近いほど強く摩耗した状態を示し、70は理論上の最高グレードを示します。
数字の前につくアルファベットにも意味があります。
MSはMint Stateの略で、流通貨として製造された形式のコインでありながら、流通による摩耗がない状態に使われます。
PFまたはPRはProofの略で、コレクター向けに特別な製造工程で作られたプルーフ貨に使われます。
AUはAbout Uncirculatedの略で、細部はしっかり残っているものの、わずかな摩耗が見られる状態を指します。
一方で、グレードが低いコインに価値がないわけではありません。
古い時代のコイン、歴史的に重要なコイン、希少なコイン、あるいは見た目に強い魅力を持つコインは、摩耗があっても十分に収集対象となります。
また、高いグレードだからといって、必ずしも良い買い物になるとは限りません。
コインの価値は、グレードだけでなく、希少性、需要、デザイン、素材、歴史的背景、鑑定の有無、価格とのバランスなど、さまざまな要素によって決まります。
グレードは、コインの状態を比較するうえで役立つ判断基準のひとつです。
ただし、グレードだけを見るのではなく、実際のコインそのものを丁寧に見ることも大切です。
